How are roles in your organization adjusting to the prevalence of AI tools?
Interesting question, and it really depends on what kind of engineering you mean (software, manufacturing, civil, etc.). In most places I’m seeing, the “role change” isn’t that AI replaces people—it’s that expectations shift toward higher judgment work: clearer problem definition, faster iteration, and stronger review/validation.
A few common adjustments that show up across teams:
More time spent on scoping and requirements. People who can translate fuzzy goals into crisp specs become more valuable.
Code/design reviews get heavier. Teams expect engineers to use AI for drafts, but also to catch edge cases, security issues, performance problems, and correctness.
Documentation and knowledge sharing improves (or at least gets faster) when AI is used well—especially for onboarding and runbooks.
New norms around what’s acceptable AI use: what can be pasted into tools, how to cite sources, and how to verify outputs.
Some roles become more “integration-oriented”: stitching together services, APIs, and workflows rather than building every component from scratch.
