Just to clarify the question: are you the French teacher, and you’re asking how to work most effectively with a classroom helper (paraprofessional, aide, student teacher, or volunteer)? And what grade level are you teaching?

If you are the French teacher, a few things usually make the partnership go smoothly:

  1. Get aligned on roles right away
Spend a few minutes agreeing on what they own during class (small groups, conversation practice, centers, checking work, behavior support, prep). Clarity prevents stepping on each other.

  2. Share your routines and “non-negotiables”
Let them know your classroom norms, how you prefer students corrected (pronunciation, grammar, when to interrupt vs. note it for later), and how you handle participation.

  3. Give them ready-to-run activities
Helpers are most useful when they don’t have to guess. Provide simple, repeatable tasks: a short speaking script, vocabulary flash drills, partner conversation prompts, or a checklist for reviewing homework.

  4. Set a quick communication rhythm
A 2-minute huddle before class (today’s objective, which students need support, what to watch for) and a 2-minute wrap-up afterward keeps you aligned without adding meetings.

  5. Have a discreet way to redirect in the moment
Agree on a signal or phrase so you can adjust what they’re doing without correcting them in front of students.

What kind of helper is it (aide/paraprofessional vs volunteer vs student teacher), and are they fluent in French?
