Having a CFM is already a strong step because IFMA positions it as a senior, broad facility-management credential tied to credibility, career advancement, and leadership in the field.

From there, the “next” certification should depend on the direction you want your career to go, not just on collecting another credential. If you want to move toward sustainability, energy, ESG, and green-building strategy, IFMA’s SFP can make sense because it is specifically focused on sustainable FM practices. If you want to move toward larger cross-functional initiatives, capital projects, vendor programs, and more formal project leadership, a project-management credential can be useful because facilities roles often overlap with budgeting, scheduling, and implementation work.

For job switching and career growth, I would suggest focusing on three things at the same time:

Reposition your resume around business impact, not just responsibilities. Show cost savings, vendor management, uptime, compliance, safety improvements, project delivery, space planning, team leadership, and any measurable results.
Decide which step up you want next. That might be Senior Facilities Manager, Regional Facilities Manager, Workplace Manager, Operations Manager, or a more specialized path in sustainability, projects, or real estate support.
Build a specialization on top of your CFM. CFM shows broad capability; the next credential should show direction.

Which direction interests you most right now: bigger facilities leadership, project management, sustainability, or corporate workplace operations?
